Waterloo & City line re-opens ahead of schedule as tube use rises
The Waterloo & City line has part-reopened from today, operating only during peak times in order to boost the tube network’s transport capacity as workers return to offices.
The line, which has been out of action since March 2020, will run every five minutes on Monday to Friday from 6am to 10am and from 3:30pm to 7pm in the afternoon.
The Waterloo & City line was scheduled to re-open on 21 June in line with so-called ‘freedom day’, when, according to the government’s roadmap, the final coronavirus restrictions will be eased.
However, according to Transport for London, ridership on the tube has increased by more than 20 per cent since 17 May, and the extra capacity provided by the re-opening of the line will provide more options for people travelling at the busiest times.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “I’m delighted that the Waterloo & City line is returning from today, ahead of schedule.
“As London’s economy continues to re-open and more people return to the office, having this key artery connecting Waterloo and Bank stations up and running will be vital.”
London Underground managing director Andy Lord added: “The reopening of the Waterloo & City line is a welcome step back towards normality for the City as well as for the rest of London.”
City of London Corporation policy chair Catherine McGuinness said: “The Waterloo & City line will support the return of the City’s commuting workforce back to the Square Mile as the easing of restrictions allows.
“The additional footfall generated will also provide reassurance to the many businesses that rely on commuter traffic for trade.”
