Man shot dead by armed police in Streatham, South London
A man has been shot dead by armed officers in Streatham in South London, following an incident that police described as terror-related.
The Metropolitan Police said a number of people had been stabbed in Streatham, and later confirmed that the man who had been shot at around 2pm was dead.
The Met said there that three people were known to have been injured in the attack, with one in hospital in a life-threatening condition. Police are in the process of informing their family.
A second victim was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to hospital, while a third has been taken to hospital is not in a life-threatening condition.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are being assessed and it has been “declared as terrorist-related”, the Met said on Twitter.
A Western security source said the incident was related to Islamist miltancy, Reuters reported.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Twitter: “Thank you to all emergency services responding to the incident in Streatham, which the police have now declared as terrorism-related”.
“My thoughts are with the injured and all those affected,” he added.
In a statement, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I am in close contact with the Met Commissioner and local representatives, and want to thank our police, security and emergency services staff for their swift and courageous response. They truly are the best of us.
“Terrorists seek to divide us and to destroy our way of life – here in London we will never let them succeed.”
Khan urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the police by calling 101.
