‘Superwoman’ Horlick runs as Lib Dem MP
Fund manager “supermum” Nicola Horlick has been unveiled as another high profile Liberal Democrat candidate.
The pro-Remain businesswoman is standing in Chelsea and Fulham, the party revealed today, going up against incumbent Conservative MP Greg Hands.
Horlick, who has been dubbed a “supermum” for balancing her career with raising six children, told the Evening Standard she was taking an unequivocally anti-Brexit position.
“Investment has fallen dramatically, growth has fallen dramatically,” she said.
“If we were to stop Brexit, there would be an economic boom in the country. Selling would go through the roof, people would start investing again.
“We are jeopardising our future. It’s madness. I cannot tell you how angry the whole thing makes me.”
Following the announcement Hands, who has been the constituency MP since 2005, tweeted: “Nicola Horlick 2019 LibDem candidate “has supported the LibDems all her life” (her new website). Nicola Horlick 1997 “supports Labour,” (The Independent) even trying to be a Labour MP. Vote LibDem, get Labour & Corbyn.”
Horlick is not the only high profile Lib Dem candidate trying to unseat a long-standing Tory.
Former Labour MP Chuka Umunna recently revealed he is standing as the Lib Dem candidate for Cities of London and Westminster, which is currently held by Conservative MP Mark Field.
The party believes it can turn its current polling – which averages low-20s – into at least 40 seats in the Commons, although the party has become increasingly confident it can secure around 100 seats, after Labour failed to adopt any position on Brexit during party conference.
While some party members sought to take an unambiguous Remain position, Jeremy Corbyn supporters voted to back the leader’s preferred option of a netural position, followed by negotiations for a new deal, followed by a referendum on that deal.
