But instead of excitement, the CGI human-cat hybrids were met with horror.
The live-action remake’s trailer has already been watched over 1.75m times on YouTube and described online as “terrifying”, “nightmarish” and a “demented dream ballet”, among other things.
The remake of Webber’s iconic musical which debuted in 1981 in the West End features the likes of Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, Jennifer Hudson, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and James Corden.
But fans were disturbed by the CGI effects, which uses human faces but with computer-generated cat bodies placed over their own.
Fans called the characters “demented” and “deformed” and were generally disturbed by what they had seen.
“This trailer made me more uncomfortable than the IT one,” said one Twitter user.
“In a way, I’m glad grumpy cat never had to see this,” another Tweet read.
“Somehow the people in Cats look more nude than if they were actually nude, and it’s weird as hell,” said one person.
While another suggested: “Looks like a bunch of naked mannequins running around with superimposed faces on them.”

The remake is directed by Tom Hooper who won an Oscar for directing The King’s Speech and has also worked on Les Miserables and The Danish Girl.
He described the movie as “a very timely story about the importance of inclusion and redemption.”
