Horse racing betting tips: Glorious looks set to Star on Newmarket’s July Course
SUMMER isn’t summer without racing on the July Course at Newmarket.
In just under a fortnight’s time, all eyes will be on the picturesque venue as it hosts the three-day July Festival, but, before then, tomorrow’s Group Three Criterion Stakes (3.15pm) is the highlight at the track and each-way thieves will be rubbing their hands at the eight runner race.
Rock-solid Group performer Suedois looks like a bet to nothing at around the 9/2 mark, while Cardsharp is a tempting 6/1 and looks capable of being in the first three.
Limato is shorter in the betting and must be respected given he’s a Group One winner, but he’ll need to be at his very best to defy a 5lb penalty.
In a race that’s returned two winning favourites in the last three renewals, GLORIOUS JOURNEY gets the vote at 11/4.
The son of Dubawi cost an eyewatering 2,600,000 guineas as a yearling and looked like being worth the outlay when winning both starts as a juvenile.
He didn’t make great strides at three, finally winning a Group Three in France on his fifth start of the season, and was then gelded ahead of his four-year-old campaign.
His eighth in the Victoria Cup at Ascot was promising, giving weight away to all-bar-one of his 24 rivals, and he then finished a length second to subsequent Diamond Jubilee runner-up Dream Of Dreams at Windsor.
He can take another step forward and give trainer Charlie Appleby a first win in the race.
The day could get off to the perfect start with 3/1 shot STAR ALEXANDER in the Listed Empress Fillies’ Stakes (2.05pm).
Clive Cox’s daughter of Starspangledbanner scorched to a brilliant six-length win at Bath last time out and could well deny 13/8 favourite Summer Romance.
The market leader has to be respected given she was earmarked for Royal Ascot after her debut at Yarmouth, but Star Alexander’s Bath success was scintillating and looks the call at the prices
