CITY VIEWS: DO YOU THINK TRAIN FARES SHOULD BE RAISED ABOVE INFLATION?
PAUL GIFFORD BANK OF ENGLAND
“Generally I think it’s too much – to increase fares in this climate, when people are under stress is wrong. I guess their argument is that if you use the train to get to the City you’ve got the money to pay the fare. I think that they should put the money into increasing the frequency of the trains. They say they do – but I don’t think so.”
IAN COTTRELL M&G FUND
“I’ve now given up taking the train – travelling on a squashed train made my brain dead before I even got to work. I now travel by motorbike. It’s not right that passengers pay a huge amount of money every month to end up squished sitting on coat racks. If more effort went into making it better, it would be more acceptable to raise rail fares.”
DEAN LUMER KNADEL
“They shouldn’t just up the fares and keep increasing them without making significant improvements to the facilities and services that they provide. There should be more accountability from rail companies to show customers where they are spending the money.
It should go back into front-line services. I currently pay a huge fare each month.”
