World Cup bid in disarray as Richards quits board
ENGLAND’S hopes of staging the 2018 World Cup have been dealt another blow after Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards resigned from the bid’s board.
The departure of Richards, who joined the bid as vice-chairman for international relations just seven months ago, comes after a restructuring of the board earlier this month.
It is the latest incident in a turbulent period for the bid, which has also been publicly criticised by Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, one of the most influential men in the game.
“With the recent changes to the England 2018 bid team, I feel I can now best support a successful bid without the necessity of sitting on the board,” Richards said. The recent restructuring saw former FA chairman Geoff Thompson and Chelsea director of communications Simon Greenberg appointed to the board.
