Car crash victim Woods lashes out at “unfounded and malicious” rumours
TIGER WOODS last night blasted the “unfounded and malicious rumours” surrounding his car crash near his Florida home on Friday.
The world No1 was taken to hospital with facial injuries but later released after his car hit a fire hydrant and a tree in the early hours.
Reports suggested that Woods had been involved in a row with his wife Elin prior to the accident amid allegations over his private life.
The 33-year-old finally broke his silence over the incident yesterday by releasing a statement on his website just hours before he was due to be interviewed by police.
In it, the 15-time major winner admitted the incident was an “embarrassment” to his family and quickly moved to quash the rumours surrounding the incident.
“This is a private matter and I want to keep it that way,” Woods said. “Although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumours that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible.”
Woods also admitted that it was Elin herself who raised the alarm with reports suggesting she used a golf club to smash the rear window and get to her semi-conscious husband.
“The only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me,”he added. “Any other assertion is absolutely false. This incident has been stressful and very difficult for Elin, our family and me. I appreciate all the concern and well wishes that we have received. I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.”
“This situation is my fault, and it’s obviously embarrassing to my family and me. I’m human and I’m not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
