Wasps cleared in Sale match fiasco
SALE have slammed Premier Rugby’s decision not to punish Wasps for pulling out of last month’s Premiership clash at short notice.
Wasps appeared before a hearing yesterday charged with breaching regulations by refusing to play at a rain-soaked Edgeley Park on 27 November.
Sale had been happy for the match to go ahead while referee David Rose had also given it his blessing.
But a Premier Rugby disciplinary panel cleared the London club after failing to find proof of their guilt.
A full explanation of the verdict is expected by tomorrow but Sale chief executive James Jennings made his displeasure clear last night. He said: “This decision is incredibly disappointing and will come as a shock to all Sale Sharks supporters who were at Edgeley Park on the night when the game was cancelled.”
The match was officially postponed at 7.45pm, 15 minutes later than the scheduled kick-off time, after Wasps insisted water down one side of the pitch made the surface unplayable.
A statement from Wasps said the club were “delighted” at last night’s verdict, adding: “London Wasps continue to share in both Wasps and Sale supporters disappointment that this game could not be played and will update further as soon as possible.”
