“Getting braces is a new lease of life. I used to play rugby quite a lot, and got hit in the teeth. They were crooked and bent, so I eventually started to hide my smile without realising it. It wasn’t until my business partner and I went on TV that I noticed how he was showing teeth and smiling, and how I kept my mouth closed. I was also missing a few teeth from the rugby and needed implants – I ended up getting braces done because my teeth had to be straightened and pushed back out (they faced inwards) in order to make room for the implants.
I decided to go ahead when my friend, a marketing executive, went for it. Also a guy I know at my tennis club, who is about 55, got braces.
As for appearance, I don’t care that I have metal train tracks. People know I’m getting something done to my teeth – they can see I’m doing something
about it.
The bottom line is that I’m going to come out with a decent smile at the end of it. It’s quite amazing how quickly you notice then change – after about six months, gaps start appearing. It makes it all worthwhile. It’s also not painful – a little sensitive at first, then fine.”
