48 hours in… Monte Carlo: Gamble at the Casino, drink at Jimmy’z and unwind at the Hermitage Hotel
WHERE TO STAY
If you’re visiting the heart of exclusivity and luxury, then make the most of it by staying in a Belle Epoque style palace. Built in 1900, Hermitage Hotel is a historic monument filled with classical vintage furnishings. It’s situated steps away from the Casino Monte-Carlo and has direct access to the Thermes Marins Monte-Carlo spa. Most of its 280 rooms have views over Monaco’s famous harbour and the Prince’s Palace, but the best view is reserved for Le Vistamar restaurant.

WHERE TO EAT
Experience the splendour of Versailles on the banks on the French Riviera at Louis XV-Alain Ducasse. This is the restaurant where Ducasse, who is currently working his magic at The Dorchester, earned his three Michelin stars. Situated in the five star Hotel de Paris, the restaurant’s a la carte menu serves locally-sourced gastronomic inventions inspired by the French and Italian Riviera – but at an equally ostentatious price. The “Les Jardins de Provence” tasting menu is €230 per head, without drinks.

WHERE TO DRINK
Monaco isn’t about blending in. It’s about being seen – and the place to be seen is Jimmy’z. This is where they hold the Formula 1 parties, which should also give you a hint about the prices (you won’t get change from a £20 note for a cocktail). But it’s worth it to gawp at the billionaires and their beautiful young playthings. The complex, on Avenue Princesse Grace, also comprises two restaurants, a night club and a terrace.

WHERE TO GO
If you’re not relaxing on the deck of a multi-million pound super yacht, there are still plenty of ways to keep yourself occupied in Monaco. No trip would be complete without a jaunt to the Monte Carlo Casino, famous for its appearances in James Bond films Never Say Never Again and Goldeneye. Even if you’re not gambling, the stunning beaux-arts building is something to behold, as are the vast sums being staked by the world’s financial elite. Make sure you dress appropriately – preferably in a blazer. And bring lots of luck.
