Vinyl countdown: Sainsbury’s has launched its own record label to take advantage of the record revival
Have we just reached peak hipster? Sainsbury’s has launched its own record label in an effort to capitalise more on the vinyl revival.
The supermarket said it will launch two compilation albums on its new Own Label imprint, which will be released via Universal and Warner Music on Friday.
The first of the two albums, Coming into Los Angeles – A Taste of West Coast, features the likes of The Monkees, Fleetwood Mac and the Doobie Brothers, while the second album, Hi Fidelity – A Taste of Stereo Sound, includes Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, alongside tracks by Elton John and 10CC.
Sainsbury’s began stocking vinyl in March 2016 for the first time since the 80s, and says it now accounts for one in every 20 vinyl records sold in the UK, with 70 per cent of the much-coveted “grocery vinyl market”.
“Our customers’ love of vinyl shows no sign of abating, so alongside the classics albums, we want to offer our shoppers something they won’t find anywhere else. Our exclusive Own Label records have been carefully tailored towards the inquisitive, cultured tastes of our customers so we’re confident that they’ll love the sound of our new releases and our ever increasing vinyl range.”

Sainsbury’s vs HMV
In June last year the supermarket entered into a war of words with high street music retailer HMV over who was the UK’s biggest vinyl retailer. In a trading update, Sainsbury’s said it had achieved an eight per cent market share, making it the UK’s biggest vinyl record retailer. HMV hit back, saying while the supermarket was selling records from more locations, it sold more records.
However, it conceded: “We don’t sell nearly as many teabags as Sainsbury’s.”
