Deputy Labour leader Tom Watson announces crackdown on gambling companies
Deputy leader of the Labour party, Tom Watson, today announced plans to crack down on gambling companies.
Speaking to delegates at the party’s conference in Brighton, Watson accused firms in the industry of targeting people with gambling problems.
He said it was wrong that firms only contributed £10m to the treatment of those with problems, and that a Labour government would introduce a levy to raise money for addicts.
“My message to the gambling firms is clear,” he said. “Stop targeting vulnerable people.”

Watson pledged that he was launching a review of gambling problems in the UK and the treatments offered on the NHS.
The deputy Labour leader also used his speech to attack Uber, saying that London mayor Sadiq Khan was right to revoke its license.
“Uber you are becoming the perfect picture of what the future of the gig economy should not look like,” he said.
Watson said all workers in the gig economy should be given rights such as sick pay.
