Sausage roll-out: Greggs launches vegan version of pastry treat
Pastry-loving vegans have cause for celebration tomorrow as Greggs the bakers rolls out a plant-based version of its most iconic snack.
Vegan sausage rolls will be on sale in 950 Greggs shops from tomorrow in time for the Veganuary campaign which encourages people to cut out animal products in January.
The rolls have 96 layers of puff pastry and a “bespoke” Quorn filling, Greggs said.
The pastries, priced at £1 or more, have been developed after 20,000 people signed a Peta petition last year.
“Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products,” Greggs chief executive Roger Whiteside said.
“We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.
“It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”
The baker will celebrate its 80th birthday this year in 1,950 shops across the country. It hopes to tap into the growing market for plant-based food and attract some of the UK’s 3.5m vegans.
A spokesperson told City AM this is the first non-meat version of its sausage roll to hit shops.
