Spider-Man: Homecoming movie surprise box office success lifts Sony shares
Shares in Sony climbed 1.7 per cent today after new film Spider-Man: Homecoming swung into the box office with a better-than-expected sales performance.

The movie spun a cool $117m (£91m) on its opening weekend at the North American box office, but industry experts had predicted it would make between $80m and $110m.
Total sales have already grossed $250m for the film, which cost $175m to make.

The takings mean that Homecoming, the first of a new Spider-Man series starring young British actor Tom Holland, has already beat the opening performance of both of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies.
Success for Homecoming will give the whole American box office a welcome boost, as summer sales are down eight per cent on last year.
