Fiat Chrysler recalls 500,000 Jeep Wrangler SUVs due to fears over air bags
Car company Fiat Chrysler has announced it is recalling half a million Jeep Wrangler SUVs, over worries that the cars' driver-side air bags will not deploy if the vehicle is driven off-road.
A clockspring located in the steering wheel that forms part of the circuit that helps control air bag function can, if driven off-road extensively or with the Wrangler's top or doors removed, keep the driver-side air bag from deploying in a crash, according to the group. The Wrangler is marketed as an off-road vehicle.
The company said it is not aware of any injuries or crashes relating to this issue.
Around the world, 498,985 Wrangler SUVs from 2007 to 2010 model years are affected by the recall, including 392,464 in the US, 35,412 in Canada, 8,529 in Mexico, and 62,580 outside North America.
Separately, Fiat Chrysler has recalled 80,474 Fiat 500 subcompact cars from model year 2012 to 2016, because of a potentially defective clutch operation in manual shift cars. Again, the firm said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries arising out of the clutch issue.
The recall affects 26,268 outside of North America, as well as 39,217 in the US, 7,834 in Canada and 7,155 in Mexico.
