13m passengers flew through London Luton Airport in the last year
Some 13m passengers have flown through London Luton Airport (LLA) in the past 12 months, a milestone for the airport, as the airport confirmed a £200m rail link that will bring LLA closer to London than Gatwick and Stansted.
The total was reached after passenger numbers jumped by 17 per cent year-on-year in April, with over 1.1m flying through the airport during the month.
In a statement the airline also said that a £200m light rail link will replace train station shuttle buses.
Earlier this month plans were announced to build the mass passenger transit (MPT) link to connect the rail station with the terminal.
The link will replace the existing shuttle bus and cut journey times from St Pancras to less than 30 minutes, bringing the airport closer to London than both Gatwick and Stansted.
"As we await a decision on a new runway in the South East, LLA continues to go from strength to strength. The airport is being transformed by our £110m investment, while the announcement of the new MPT link will make accessing the airport easier than ever for passengers," Nick Barton, chief executive of LLA, said.
"At the same time, whether you’re a holidaymaker or business passenger, our strong relationships with our airline partners are allowing us to deliver more frequent flights to a wider variety of destinations than ever before."
