150-mile cycle ride to honour cricketer Tom
IT might not sounds like much given the recent exploits of cycling heroes Bradley Wiggins or Mark Cavendish, but the 30-strong team arriving in London today at the end of a 150-mile bike ride across the country are far from professional cyclists.
In fact the majority of the group completing the route from Cardiff to London are cricketers – joined by the odd investment manager – all peddling furiously to raise money in honour of cricketer Tom Maynard, a former batsman for both Glamorgan and Surrey who died in June.
In memory of Tom his family has established a trust to provide bursaries to aspiring cricketers and other sportspeople who need support to fund their training.
Cycling alongside players including Andrew Flintoff and Steve James are Tom’s father, Matthew Maynard, and two brave volunteers from Brewin Dolphin, the investment management firm that is sponsoring the gruelling ride, with the team due to finish at The Oval ground this afternoon.
The total amount raised was nearing £19,000 last night, but there’s still a chance to boost the trust’s funds by donating at: justgiving.com/teams/TomMaynard
