Six key takes from the London Mayoral election 2016
Sadiq Khan stormed to victory in yesterday's London Mayoral election after a bitter campaign in which the Conservatives were accused of trying to smear him.
In his acceptance speech, Khan said he was proud that Londoners had chosen hope over fear and unity over division.
"I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again, fear does not make us safer it makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city," he said.
Here's a quick round-up of some of the key points from yesterday's Mayoral election:
- Khan's victory ends eight years of Conservative control at City Hall, having beat Tory rival Zac Goldsmith by 1, 310,143 votes to 994,614.
- Khan received 44 per cent of first preference votes, while Goldsmith received 35 per cent.
- Khan's 13.6 per cent margin of victory over Goldsmith was the widest in a London mayoral election in 16 years.
- Labour won 10 seats in the London Assembly, while the Torys won eight.
- The Greens won two, Ukip won two and the Liberal Democrats won one.
- The Women's Equality Party was the best performing smaller party.
